I hope you've tried his primary example, at least for his
early career, Theodore Sturgeon, as well. To me, Sturgeon and
Bradbury feel a bit like a reversal of the influence-flow
between Ross Macdonald and Chandler (Bradbury and Chandler
being a bit more fantasticated in their approach even to
nonfantastic matters, Millar and Sturgeon perhaps getting a
bit closer to the heart of human affairs).
Reading Bradbury's YA collections such as R IS FOR ROCKET, I
had no problem plunging along from story to story...I shall
have to see if reading many of the same stories in his
adult-oriented collections would have the same effect. I do
know what you mean about Cheever. Most profound writers can
do that to you...the other folk mentioned here very much
included.
How have you found Bradbury's recent cf? TM

Todd, I do have the Vintage Bradbury. I don't think I ever
read the whole thing, though. I admire Bradbury, but I can
only read him in small doses. I need to take long breaks
between one story and the next. The same thing happens to me
with Cheever, another master of the short story. I suppose my
mind wants the story to stay, wants to chew it around a bit
before moving on to something else.
Regards,
MrT
