Having finished _The Dain Curse_ and _Red Harvest_ recently, the middle-aged Op has left a strong impression on me. He has to deal with the Old Man at the home office while directing the cub agents with him in the field. Wise and worldly, he's also human enough to make blunders. Not learning/knowing his name is part of the appeal.
