Some Rara-Avis members like to report on their finds in the
hope of feedback so I couldn't resist telling you about my
finds yesterday at our annual Grace Hospital Book Sale. While
this sale doesn't compare in size to the Children's Hospital
sale in the spring that attracts dealers from across North
America, the prices are much lower with many vintage PBs
going for .10 and .25 Canadian.
I found two John D. MacDonalds that were missing from my
collection - Murder in the Wind and the non-fiction The House
Guests. Also found Dead Calm by Charles Williams; Death of an
Informer by Will Perry that won an Edgar for best paperback
mystery; Five Pieces of Jade by John Ball; The Riddle of
Samson and Frame-Up by Andrew Garve; a French mystery by
Roger Gouze titled A Quiet Game of Bambu; The Decoy by Edward
S. Aarons; and plenty of .10 books by the classic crime
writers.
I had been looking for something by Ted Lewis since reading
about him on this list and found Jack Carter and the Mafia
Pigeon for ten cents. Other UK finds were Russell James'
Payback and Tinplate by Neville Steed, a Crime Writers'
Association Award winner. When I will read any of them is the
burning question.
