What would a hard-boiled sub-genre be without an author named
"McDonald?"
After completing military service in Viet Nam, Cherokee Paul
McDonald joined the Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Police Department
where he spent ten years. Since leaving police work he's
become a well-regarded, if irritatingly non-prolific,
cop-novelist.
His only two cop novels so far are THE PATCH, about a serial
killer who leaves a police uniform shoulder patch at each
murder scene, and SUMMER'S REASON, about an FLPD policewoman
who gets caught up in a case involving the sexual
exploitation of children.
Two things are worth mentioning about this last novel, given
recent discussion threads. First is that the protagonist is
female while the writer is male. Second is that the
protagonist was raped as a child and, consequently, has some
unresolved sexual issues that are partly resolved when a
kindly colleague from the Miami PD takes her to bed, Travis
McGee-style, for some therapeutically gentle
love-making.
In addition to THE PATCH and SUMMER'S REASON, McDonald has
also written GULF STREAM, which I THINK (but am not sure) is
a Viet Nam-set military novel; UNDER CONTRACT, a true-crime
book about a cop who hired out as a hit man; BLUE TRUTH, an
autobiographical account of his law enforcement career; and,
most recently, INTO THE GREEN, an autobiographical account of
his military experiences.
