John D. MacDonald was a man of his time. When I first read
him, I was taken aback by some of the same passages that have
been quoted here, because the times had changed.
JDM may be hard on hookers and homosexuals early on, but not
nearly as hard as Mickey Spillane. Can you name a male writer
of that time who did treat them fairly?
With regard to men of that time, and those of today and to
paraphrase an old "feminist" ad: most of us
"have come a long way, baby."
Unfortunately, from what I see on TV, and hear in sports bars
and in their music, it looks as if many males under thirty
are retrogressing with regard to their attitude toward
women--and gays. Hopefully, it is only among those who don't
know how to write anything except hip-hop, rap and
graffiti.
