A recent exchange on a phrase in an Ian Rankin novel
concluded that "like your loafers" referred to gays, possibly
related to a chat-up line. One of my colleagues suggests that
Rankin may be playing with words. She has heard the phrase
"someone light in his loafers" applied to homosexuals.
