Athough you can't call him hardboiled, I think Robert
Cormier's earlier YA novels (Chocolate War, I Am The Cheese,
After the First Death) are some of the best noir since
Woolrich. A testemant to their quality is the fact that he
was (and probably still is) one of the most frequently
censored author in school libraries--not for sex, drugs,
violence, or politics, but for the overwhelming negative tone
of his work.
Gotta love it.
