I have a collection called, "The Menace Masters: Tales from
Boucher's Choicest," and editor Jeanne F. Bernkopf refers to
the Joe Gores' story,
"File #1: The Mayfield Case" as a "private-detective
procedural story." She says Gores provides "the day-to-day
routine of the profession and its basic hard-nosed attitude
toward life." The story includes date/time lines before
sections. Now we can start carving up p.i. novels/stories by
the sub-genres
"p.i.-traditional" and "p.i.-procedural" and "p.i.-n.c." (no
