List member John Williams wrote a book, INTO THE BADLANDS,
some time ago, where he went on a sort of cross-country trip
interviewing contemporary US crime fiction authors of the
time in their hometowns. The book was as much about the
context these folks' books were set & written in as the
interviews themselves. I'm not sure how the book would read
for a native American but for a foreigner hooked by American
crime fiction it was fascinating. From memory (unfortunately
I no longer own a copy) some authors (& their locales)
covered were : Elmore Leonard, George Higgins, James Crumley,
James Lee Burke, Tony Hillerman. Not quite what you were
asking about but I thought it might be of interest.
