Much as I love the Martin Beck series, I have to agree with
Jim that they're not true blue procedurals. In my mind, the
pure prodecural is an exposition of police investigative
techniques, with little criticism of same. Sjowall and Wahloo
were more interested in writing a series of novels critiquing
Swedish society using the conventions of the police
procedural genre. I think calling them "semi-procedurals" is
fair warning that this isn't everyone's cup of tea.
Heck, I just call 'em "Swedish Police Procedurals."
