I would like to second Bill's recommendation of Jonathan Craig's 6th Precinct books. If you love McBain's 87th Precinct, you'll at least like Craig.

As for Craig having anything in common with Helen Nielson...well, they did both write for Manhunt back in the day, so presumably the same editor liked them.

PS Incidently, the 6th Precinct books were reprinted in the '60s or early
'70s by one of the lesser paperback houses, making them that much cheaper and easier to find.
