Rene: Demaris was a reporter, I believe. He went on to write
some big hardcover nonfiction (THE GREEN FELT JUNGLE) and
even a novel or two. I've read all his Gold Medal Books, and
one he wrote for Avon, THE GOLD-PLATED SEWER. I can't
remember which ones I thought were best, but there's a serial
killer novel called THE SLASHER that predates Hannibal Lecter
by a long way. It's pretty good, and I must have liked all of
them since I kept reading.
