this one. After reading others' posts, I take it that Coffin
Ed and Grave Digger make up about a 7-book series."
Eight, actually:
A Rage in Harlem (AKA For the Love of Imabelle) The Real Cool
Killers The Crazy Kill The Big Gold Dream All Shot Up The
Heat's On Cotton Comes to Harlem Blind Man with a
Pistol
I don't know if any or all are still in print, but Payback
Press (UK, www.canongate.co.uk) published the complete Harlem
Cycle in three volumes, each with three books. The third is
filled out with Plan B, an uncompleted non-Coffin
Ed/Gravedigger Jones manuscript. Each also has an interesting
intro, the first by Melvin Van Peebles, the third by Lesley
Himes (the author's widow); the second is introduced with
Himes's own essay, The Dilemma of the Black Writer in
America.
As has already been noted, he wrote a bunch of other novels,
too. The only one I've read so far is Run, Man, Run, which I
recommend. I have several more on the TBR shelves.
