Mark, The first, No Score, Block describes as, " a picaresgue
tale of a young man's efforts to make his way in the world to
cure his virginity." His title was Lecher in the Rye which
should give you an idea of what book was its inspiration.
Incidentally, Block's original title for the second book was,
Below the Belt. I thought the first was a pretty good more
ribald takeoff on Catcher in the Rye. The second was less
good. Having gone as far as he could with this idea Block was
left with a likable character and nowhere to go. He made Chip
the Archie Goodwin like aide to his Nero Wolfe imitation, Leo
Haig, in two books. IMO, they are mediocre, but if you like
Wolfe you would probably enjoy them. Obviously, none are hard
boiled. Mark
