i don't think i've ever seen anthony hyde's name or books
mentioned here. i had read his _china lake_ many years ago,
and seeing it for sale at a used book store here re- cently
made me think of it again.
the book has got some excellent hardboiled scenes in it. in
one of them jack tannis, a retired naval officer, does
nothing more than kill a rattlesnake at a woman's trailer,
but there is a roiling undercurrent of violence and tension
in the scene that is stunningly well-written.
the ending has a great twist to it.
