An English translation of a very good novel by JC Izzo,
French author, is published in the UK as: 'One Helluva Mess'
(original title: Total Kheops
- 1995) - Arcadia Books
'Total Kheops' is the first and best novel of the noir
trilogy devoted to his "police captain" (commissaire) Fabio
Montale in Marseille (big French town on the Mediterranean
coast). A very gripping and pessimistic story about the
battle of Montale against organized corruption and his own
inner demons. A great book. The two other novels that
followed, 'Chourmo' and 'Solea', are not on par
(even if they are interesting):
French TV issued 3 made for TV films 'Chourmo' and 'Solea'
adaptations of the Montale series earlier this year, with
Delon as Montale. The first film was a total miss, but the
second one was OK and the plot even bettered compared to the
original. The third film is mediocre - the book was the
weakest of the series, but still well above the third
film.
A cinema adaptation of the first book will be released this
week in France as a feature film but without Delon.
