It appears that no one has mentioned author John Harvey,
whose Charlie Resnick series features a "lone wolf" police DI
in the mean streets of Nottingham. All around excellent
stuff. I would recommend reading in order, or at least
reading the first one first (Lonely Hearts) as later books
refer back to the events of this book quite a bit. I think my
personal favorite is Cutting Edge (#3) -- certainly an
unforgettable motive or perhaps motif. Resnick is a jazz buff
and refers to his favorites frequently, so you'll have a
sound track to play as you read. Harvey recently called a
halt to the series after 12 (?) books, alas. I'll have to do
some rereading in honor of our theme.
BTW, I am another who was persuaded by miker's passionate
review of The Last Good Kiss into finally pulling it off the
TBR shelf. I don't think I have anything to say that can add
to what's already been said, except that I will be reading
more by Crumley.
