I like The Underground Man, though it's a bit overdone and
you can see the solution coming miles away. I feel no urge to
reread it, but have good memories of it.
I recently reread The Barbarous Coast, a book I hadn't
revisited in more than 20 years. It's from 1956 and
thus
"middle-period" Macdonald. I found it interesting, credible
and very readable, a good classic PI novel. It reminded me of
the fact that Archer stopped wisecracking in the model of
Marlowe long before The Galton Case, which is the canonical
dividing line. I am going to reread all the early Macdonalds,
which may turn out, surprisingly, to hold up better than the
overtly psychoanalytical ones.
