I've never read the book, but I saw the movie years ago, and
it was a terrific. It was about the frustration of the
depression, the frustration of wanting to be a movie star,
and evil of those who manage to survive by taking advantage
of others.
It's dark, but there is no crime as I remember it, but there
is a lot of dishonesty.
The scene of a Jean Harlow wannabe in the shower, is one of
the most heart wrenching I have ever seen--so powerful that
the actress who played the lead, British playing an American,
was nominated for best supporting actress.
Sorry I forgot her name, but the movie . . . damn!
