> Moody has chosen to write about an essentially
hard-boiled world in what
is a decidedly soft-boiled way.
I have read all the Evan Horne novels and I would have to say
that about sums it up. I really like this series because of
the way it integrates jazz into the plots. The latest, about
Chet Baker, has passages about Baker's last few days that are
some of the best writing in the book. Horne is not a
hard-boiled protagonist, and probably would get the shit
kicked out of him anytime he confronted a violent person. But
he is a dogged detective, and well worth reading.
