John D. MacDonald's APRIL EVIL contains a hit man as a main
character, but he's not nearly as sympathetic a character as
Keller (the only one I've read of the examples you gave).
He's not the main character, but he figures
prominently.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were other MacDonald
stand-alones featuring this kind of character, but, although
I own many of them, I haven't read most of them yet. Once I
finish my darn semester (a week from today, if all goes well)
I'll get back to my quest to read all the McGees in order,
and then maybe read some of the stand-alones.
