That's an assumption. Holmes financial needs are off-page. There's enough room to assume either way.

I said PIs not cops. While police officers have slipped into the genre, it's primarily one of PIs. Since my point involves the devolution of the genre and not one of it's evolutionary traits, it's the PI aspect that's definitive not whether or not the lower classes could enter the police force.
