You know, when I read Anthony's post, Scudder jumped to my
mind in this regard, as well. But I decided that he really
was self-confident, because he never, ever gives up on a case
until it's resolved. He's dogged, to the point of ticking off
the cops he hangs around because he keeps pressing on long
after the official file has been closed.
That said, however, I think self-confident is the wrong
phrase. Self-reliant is better. Jim D. could make a good
argument that this is part of being tough, but I'm not sure
I'd agree. It's one kind of tough, maybe, but I'm not sure
one can be hard-boiled without being self-reliant.
