Jim, I appreciate Parker as a character (wouldn't say I
"like" him), but your feelings about Parker echo my feelings
about Tom Ripley - who is some other people's favorite
"antihero." i think there is some kind of balance that makes
various "psycho sidekicks"/"antiheros" or whatever palatable
to some and not to others. this may be one of the hardest
elements to put one's finger on - I mean, I appreciate
Parker, I love Keller and Bubba Rogowski, and Mouse but
Ripley bores me, and I think Coben's Win is my least favorite
character ever in every single way. I hardly know anybody who
likes *all* the good/bad characters, and I don't know many
except the exceptionally moralistic or squeamish who dislike
them all, either. I'm not gonna try to develop a formula for
why some of these characters work for me and other don'. who
can tell?
