First, as I've already told Mark, I never said language was
the SOLE criteria. I said it was an essential criteria.
Second, the list wasn't of the best hard-boiled characters,
but of the best characters from hard-boiled crime
fiction.
Third, if Eliza Doolittle was a cop, a crook, a spy, or a PI,
then she might (pre-Higgins treatment) very well
qualify.
