The way the story is written, there is no hint by Hemingway
that she did it on purpose, showing his sense of irony.
In my opinion, if she did it intentionall, it greatly weakens
the point of the story. In fact, it makes there no point at
all to it.
But, like so many things, it's a matter of
opinion.
