Would Deputy Detective Carl Houseman qualify? He's a great series character (4 books) written by Donald Harstad. Houseman is a 25 year veteran of the Iowa State Police who has a few more interesting cases than real life 25 year Iowa State police veteran Harstad had. The first book is _Eleven Days_ The second, which gets even better is _Known Dead_ The third is _The Big Thaw_ and number four was just released in Hardcover I believe. I highly recommend these.
