Oh, okay, I'll play too. Has Bill shown up yet to find up one
topic has hijacked his list?
I'm trying to sort it out, but it's really hard to keep track
of who has or hasn't been nominated or seconded, what with
the flood of posts, counter posts and re-quoted and requoted
posts. Someone should do a web page.
Anyway, here's a few I don't think have been
mentioned/nominated/seconded:
Cliff Hardy by Peter Corris (series) Sid Halley by Dick
Francis (trilogy) Jo Gar by Raoul Whitfield (short stories)
Dave Brandstetter by Joseph Hansen (series) Jack Liffey by
John Shannon (series) Nestor Burma by Leo Malet (series) Max
Latin by Norbert Davis (short stories) Dan Roman by Edward
Mathis (series) Ms Tree by Max Allan Collins and Terry Beatty
(comics) Ed Clive by Leigh Brackett (No Good From a Corpse)
Slot Machine Kelly by Dennis Lynds (short stories) Shaft by
Ernest Tidyman (the books, not the films) Ginny Fistoulari by
Reed Stephens (series) Benny Cooperman by Howard Engel
(series) Jake Asch by Arthur Lyons (series) Carver by John
Lutz (series) Bernie Gunther by Philip Kerr (series) Mitch
Roberts by Gaylord Dold (series) Anna Lee by Liza Cody
(series) Jim Sader by Delores Hitchens (Sleep with Slander)
Tom O'Toole by Arthur Miller (Everybody Wins) Ben Perkins by
Rob Kantner (short stories, series) Mac by Thomas Dewey
(series) Frank Clemons by Thomas Cook (trilogy) Batman by Bob
Kane (comics, books, film, TV, lunch boxes, etc...)
Of course, some of these are hard-boiled full-time, but most
of them fluctuate. Even some of the shoe-ins (Marlowe,
Archer, Hammer, Spenser, etc.) display tremendous amounts of
gushing, oozing sentimentality at times. But we shouldn't
hold that against them. They're hard when they have to
be.
What's that line about Marlowe being hard enough to live in
the world, but soft enough to deserve to live in it?
