It was a dark and stormy night in Denver, but Pelecanos made
it to the Tattered Cover. Not a bad crowd, considering the
weather. He gave some good answers to the typical questions
(how do you plot your novels), and some classy answers to not
so typical questions (has the DC crime rate really gone down
[basically, no, it's gone up, and gave some reasons]; is it
hard to gear up and promote and talk about a book that you
finished writing more than a year ago [basically, yes]; with
all kinds of books to choose from, why read crime fiction
[it's writing that talks about things that won't be written
about in literary fiction, Bonfire of the Vanities was
nothing but lies, something about racism, etc.]) Next stop,
Southern Cal.
