That's exactly what it was. It treated the short story as if
it was the first chapter of a novel rather than a
self-contained story.
And as Rene said, it is a damned fine movie! One of the best
crime films of the '40s.
I took issue with Rene's comment that the film had
"nothing to do" with the story. No one who has seen the first
twenty minutes of the film could say that it has "nothing" to
do with the story.
