I agree with Neil. No one is more
frustrating to read (at times) than Ellroy, but in terms of
technique, nobody reaches higher or reaches more often. His
politics and world view are becoming so intrusive in his
fiction, that eventually, he may chase me away, but I'll cut
him a lot of slack in style and delivery.
