Heat" &
"Odds Against Tomorrow". "The Big Heat" was, of course made
into a terrific film by Fritz Lang with Glen Ford & Lee
Marvin, "Odds" was filmed also, starring Robert Ryan &
Harry Belafonte, IIRC, directed by Robert Wise & also
worth a look.
