The McGee's are great storytelling. I was a touring musician
and we used to pas them around the van like wine bottles; as
you finished one you handed it to whoever hadn't read it yet.
The most fun I've had with a series since is Lawrence Block's
Scudder books. Block has much the same style as JDMcD, and
his early, non-series paperbacks are reminiscent of McD's
early non-McGee books. Tight, clever journeyman prose, if
obviously cranked out for a word-rate.
