I just had the opportunity to read RETRIBUTION by Stuart
Kaminsky, the second book in a series about Lew Fonesca.
Fonesca is a process server living in Sarasota, Florida. He
is hiding from life because he has never gotten over the
hit-and-run accident that killed his wife in Chicago. At one
point, in defending his depression, Lew says, "I don't want
to die. I just to stay depressed and hide." Fonesca is not a
violent man, and relies on a rather stoic but potentially
violent sidekick named Ames McKinney, who acts as his backup.
This novel has two plot lines: a teenaged recovering
prostitute and the theft of some manuscripts from a recluse
writer coupled with a missing sister case. I would highly
recommend this hardboiled novel and I am going to seek out
VENGEANCE, the first book in the series.
