I've seen both the westerns Hellman shot back-to-back in the
late Sixties. Ride in the Whirlwind is excellent and unusual,
and The Shooting is one of the unsung masterpieces of the
American screen, a phenomenally strange existential western
with a knockout ending. It's like an American version of an
Antonioni film (which might not be a recommendation for
everyone), with a great performance by Warren Oates.
Hellman's later Italian western China 9, Liberty 37 also has
its admirers; I only saw it once long ago, in a cut
pan-and-scan TV print, so I can't really judge. But do check
out the Sixties pair: both are now available on DVD.
