Zevon's Excitable Boy came out in 1978. I just looked it up
in Nolan's bio and Zevon did meet Macdonald, through rock
writer Paul Nelson (among many other things; isn't he PK
Dick's and Theodore Sturgeon's literary executor?).
Supposedly, Zevon's childhood was like those in many of
Macdonald books. He once said, "I was that kid in The
Zebra-Striped Hearse."
