i read the online atwood article about hammett. it was
interesting. i have read _red harvest_ and _maltese falcon_,
but i didn't know much about hammett. the article gave quite
a bit of revealing biographical material.
when i first read it, i got the impression that atwood really
didn't much care for hammett's writing. much of her
appreciation for his writing was from an 11-year- old's view,
and i sensed the proverbial "damning with faint praise". but
when i read it again, i decided i was probably wrong.
there were a couple things that went over my head. i'd never
associated complex plots with being "Jacobean", and she used
a couple words that started with ur-, one being
"ur-form" in the footnotes.
