You can't go wrong with HORSES. It's not only McCoy's best
book, it belongs on any noir/hardboiled top 20. The only
problem is that it makes the rest of McCoy's books (IMHO)
look pallid in comparison.
Writers are always swinging for the fences. Once in a while,
they hit them.
