The Charles Williams I meant is the author of River Girl (my
favorite) and other Gold Medal and Dell First Edition
classics. The guy John D. MacDonald said "may just be the
best of all of us." A lot of his later books dealt with the
sea, but I prefer the earlier ones: Nothing in Her Way, The
Big Bite, A Touch of Death, Hell Hath no Fury, the
aforementioned River Girl.
Among others. If you like hardboiled and noir and
haven't read that Charles Williams, you're missing a real
treat.
