Our own Kevin Smith has a great Scudder article on his
Thrilling Detectives website. It can be found at:
http://www.thrillingdetective.com/scudder_matt.html
It lists the novels and short stories in publication order,
so you can read them chronologically.
One exception to the "Read in Order" consensus. Although WHEN
THE SACRED GINMILL CLOSES, and its short story version, "By
the Dawn's Early Light," were both published after EIGHT
MILLION WAYS TO DIE, they are set prior to the events in
EIGHT MILLION. It's not clear exactly where they fit in the
saga, but you might want to read them before you read EIGHT
MILLION
(which, BTW, I consider one of the best PI novels ever
written).
On the other hand, they are also written by a Matt who's
already undergone the events in EIGHT MILLION, and is looking
back on an earlier chapter in his life, so you can go either
way.
For the record, I preferred "Dawn's Early Light" to the
expanded version, GINMILL. In fact, I regard it as one of the
best PI short stories ever published.
