I just received Lawrence Block's newsletter today. It seems
to illustrate a problem facing of an author He touts then
sells his books directly to the public. Unless Block has
somebody working for him to do the actual accounting and
mailing, not to mention the promoting, it seems even as
prolific a writer as Block, is spending a lot of time and
energy doing this that otherwise go into writing. I realize
writers regularly travel to promote their work, but hat at
least has the benefit of their being exposed to people and
places they normally wouldn't be exposed to if they just
remained at home writing. This is illustrated again by Block.
He loves to travel for pleasure and a lot of these places and
probably people show up in his writing. Mark
