I am way behind on so many worthy writers and Gary Phillips
is in that group.
I definitely need to find a copy of THE JOOK and his
more recent novels. Did an impulse purchase of PERDITION
U.S.A. when it was first out after reading the great Ray
Arcel quote that leads it off. I figured any guy who quotes
Arcel knows his way around and won't disappoint. He didn't.
Phillips is the real thing.
Regarding the discussion of Miles Davis, I think I can
continue it and almost stay on topic. Earlier this year I
picked up a Davis CD in Brussels of his soundtrack work for
the 1957 movie "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud" or "Lift to the
Scaffold." I understand that it was titled "Frantic" for
English distribution. Directed by Louis Malle and starring
Jeanne Moreau, the plot sounds very James M. Cain like.
Is the video worth seeking out? I love the CD, which includes
the soundtrack plus alternate tracks from the recording
session.
