If I recall correctly, in his early interviews, before he had finished constructing his idiot filmfan savant persona, Tarantino often mentioned crime books he had read. I don't remember any specific names besides Leonard and Hiassen, but I'm pretty sure he brought up a number of Gold Medal-types, too.
