Mark asks for some examples of "cool" characters. I think
Elmore Leonard has written many, among which I find Stick,
Mr. Majestick and the guy in The Moonshine War particularly
memorable. These are characters that don't take themselves
all that seriously, guys who see life as a game (it is), and
who do not wax existentialist -- unless that's the point, as
in the works of James Sallis, and even in his case there's
some coolth.
Other authors with cool characters: George V. Higgins,
Charles Willeford (even Hoke Mosely, who has a mostly
miserable life, is cool, very cool), Charles Williams,
William Campbell Gault, Ross Thomas, Jan Willem Whatshisname,
Donald Westlake (Tucker Coe excepted), Lawrence Block (with a
few exceptions).
I could go on, but I think these should give you an idea of
what I'm talking about.
Regards,
MrT
