You've got to love a city that puts up a historical marker
for a fictional event:
"ON APPROXIMATELY THIS SPOT MILES ARCHER, PARTNER OF SAM
SPADE, WAS DONE IN BY BRIGID O'SHAUGNESSY."
The Immortal Game by Mark Coggins makes good use of its San
Francisco setting, including many locations from Hammett's
fiction. I pulled out my copy of Don Herron's Dashiell
Hammett Tour as I was reading it, so I'd get the
references.
I didn't get a chance to go on Herron's tour the one time I
visited SF
(I did get my picture taken under the above marker, though),
but a friend of mine recently did and she thoroughly enjoyed
it and sitting in a bar with Herron afterwards, talking about
Hammett (and Willeford).
