Ross Macdonald did too often tell the same story, but it was
a good story, and the psychological depth he invests in his
writing, his sense of place, and the often aching feeling of
loss--all these make him a great novelist.
I say this even though I cannot claim lack of prejudice--one
of the proudest moments for my specialist press, Crippen
& Landru, was publishing earlier this year STRANGERS IN
TOWN: THREE NEWLY DISCOVERED MYSTERIES, by Ross Macdonald,
edited by Tom Nolan.
