Actually, there are/were plenty of those pesky Protestants in
Boston, too. As a matter of fact, my grandfather once told a
Catholic priest to Go to Hell after the priest had confronted
him numerous times about not attending church; the priest
refused to believe that a man named Sullivan in Boston might
not be Catholic, might even be a Protestant.
However, I think the phrase Immaculate Conception has
acquired a common usage meaning that is far less exact than
that in the catechism. I think it is easily understood as a
sarcastic remark made by someone accused of fathering a child
with someone with whom he has not had sex.
