That's Memento, a great neo-noir (the director's earlier
movie, Following, is also quite good), but the main character
isn't really a PI, at least not technically. Before his
affliction, he was an insurance investigator. Afterwards,
he's just a noir hero looking for the guy who killed his
wife.
