Passing up HIS NAME WAS DEATH is perhaps a criminal
offense--it's one of Brown's best. It sounds like the ss
collections may be from the Dennis McMillan series, which
basically reprinted *every* pulp story Brown ever wrote.
Although there are many gems hidden in the series (which I
believe ran 20 volumes or so) and it's a must for all Brown
collectors, I don't recommend them. Brown was a pulp writer,
basically learning his craft in public and getting paid for
it. The books are loaded with beginner's efforts, experiments
that didn't work, and other also-ran stories. I think it's
sad that these anthologies can be found on library shelves
while classic Brown collections (NIGHMARES AND GEZENSTACKS,
MOSTLY MURDER, HONEYMOON IN HELL) have long since been
discarded.
The WR Burnett Black Box is also worht picking up.
