I totally agree that substitutes for the word, "said" are
fine, if they aren't overused -- and if they fall within the
realm of the possible. A character can ask something, scream
something, whisper something. But I can't laugh something or
snort something (words, I mean) or spit something, and if I
can't do it, my characters can't do it. One can say something
and laugh. But try laughing real words.
